Prof. (Dr) Prabir Kumar Sengupta
Medical Superintendent cum VicePrincipal
I an extremely honored and privileged to get the opportunity to work in this esteemed Institution, Burdwan Medical College and Hospital, Bardhaman to serve health care facilities to a huge population residing in the District of Purba Bardhaman, and its surrounding districts like Paschim Bardhaman, Hoogly, Birbhum, Purulia, and surrounding States like Jharkhand and Bihar.
Journey of this Medical College and Hospital started on 9th November, 1910 with the name of Frazer Hospital with 127 beds, latter the Frazer Hospital was renamed to Bijoy Chand Hospital or ‘BC Hospital’ which was renamed after the ‘Maharajadhiraj’ of Burdwan, Bijoy Chand Mahtab. Latter in 1969, with the initiative and whole hearted efforts of eminent personalities of Burdwan like Mr Jitendranath Mitra, District Board President, Maharaja Abhay Chand Mahatab, Dr Narottom Samanta, Dr Sailendranath Mukhopadhyay, Dr Sailendranath Bhattacharya , and others, Bijoy Chand Hospital has been transformed into a Medical College as 'Burdwan University Medical College' with annual intake of 50 MBBS students directly under Burdwan University with due consent and whole hearted inspiration from Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal. In 1976, Burdwan Medical College was undertaken by Government of West Bengal under the affiliation of Burdwan University. In the year 2000 (From 28.09.2000), annual intake of MBBS students increased from 50 to 100, and from 01.01.2003, Burdwan Medical College became affiliated with West Bengal University of Health Sciences. Intake of undergraduate (MBBS) students increased from 100 to 150 since 09.07.2013. Post Graduate curriculum started in the year 1992 with annual intake of 10 students which latter gradually increased, and at present total annual intake of PG students in different disciplines is 152.
Presently, BMCH has got four complexes: (1) Burdwan Medical College (BMC) complex, (2) Burdwan Medical College and Hospital (BMCH) main complex, (3) Anamoy Super Specialty Wing Hospital (SSWH) complex, and (4) College of Nursing (CON) & Nursing Traing School (NTS) complex, where 28 disciplines are accommodated, having 1236 number of sanctioned beds. Regarding course curriculum, there are 150 admission of MBBS students, 152 admission of Post Graduate trainees in broad and super specialty, 50 admission for BSC Nursing students, 100 admission of GNM students, 10 admission for MSC Nursing students in each year along with there are many paramedical technical courses (Like BPT, DMLT, DRD, DRT, DDialysis, DCLT, DECG, DCCT, DOPTH, DNET, DOTT) are running in Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.
In last few years there are considerable development in regard to infrastructure(One lecture theatre at the top of OPD building, one G+8 building in front of emergency, one comprehensive store, vertical extension of Pediatric building, renovation of most of the old buildings like blood bank, RRMB, G &O building, Chest OPD building, Emergency building etc) and incorporation and implementation of different projects like: Trauma Care Centre (TCC)-already running, Tertiary Cancer Care Centre (TCCC), National Programme on Prevention and Management of Burn Injuries (NPPMBI), Centre of Excellency of Psychiatry (CEP), 20 bedded Dialysis unit under PPP mode which are in the process of implementation. For near future few infrastructural projects have been taken care after getting approval from Department of Health and Family Welfare, like one G+10 building at the site of old RRMB building, two night shelters for patient parties-one for main campus & other one for Anamoy, vertical extension of Anamoy building for incorporation of other Super Specialty Departments which are not available at present. All became possible only because of generous support from the end of Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal, and at the same time I have got all along support and cooperation from local general administration as well as from different categories of staff, students and ex-students of BMC&H, and I am extremely obliged for that.
I hope in future Burdwan Medical College and Hospital will play a pivotal role as a peripheral Medical College with a designation of Centre of Excellency not only for the State but also at the National level.
I wish every success of this Institution in regard to future development with support and cooperation from every sphere.
Thank you all.
